What to Wear in San Francisco this Summer: Bay Area Style Tips

Dressing for July in the Bay Area is challenging: cool mornings, warm afternoons, random wind gusts, and microclimates that change block by block.

Luckily, I know how to dress for this confusing weather.

As a personal stylist currently working with clients in both San Francisco and Oakland, I’ve seen firsthand what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to Bay Area summer outfits.

Whether you’re commuting to work, running errands, or headed to Dolores Park for a picnic, here’s what you need to look good and feel comfortable.

Layers are a necessity in San Francisco

The key to dressing for a Bay Area summer is layering. Think cropped trenches, oversized utility jackets, or slouchy knits you can throw on (and take off) multiple times a day. A lightweight coat or soft cardigan is essential for those sudden temperature drops—especially once the fog makes an entrance.

versatile Shoes are key for Bay Area Summer Style

For the Bay Area, shoes that can handle hills, sidewalks, grass, and maybe even a hike—but still look good with your outfit are essential. I love a sporty Teva-style sandal (yes, they can be cute), updated Birks, or an elevated sneaker that works with wide-leg pants or a summer dress. Comfort and style—you can have both.

Always carry a (light-weight) scarf

A versatile scarf is a game-changer. It adds style, takes up no space, and works as a wrap, a blanket, a head covering, or even a napkin in a pinch. Honestly? Every Bay Area wardrobe needs one. Opt for something soft, lightweight, and neutral enough to go with everything in your closet.

Don’t forget a hat

A good hat is more than just a cute accessory—it’s a practical must-have for San Francisco’s unpredictable summer weather. Whether you're shielding your face from the midday sun or keeping your head warm when the fog rolls in, a stylish hat can make all the difference. Think classic wide-brim styles, chic bucket hats, or a go-to baseball cap that elevates your everyday outfit.
